FINAL REFLECTION

Experience

It surely has been a rocky 14 weeks. Typography is by far the worst class I've had in this semester without a doubt. I disagree with the practices done by both lecturers and I personally think that a good amount of improvements, from the nature of the grading system to the values that are practised in class, can be made by the lecturers to ensure that their future students would gain the most benefit from their time in this module. Nevertheless, I must admit that it was through the behaviour of these lecturers that were practised in and out of class that I find myself continuously striving to be better. Although chasing the grade that I wanted was a big influence on my motivation, it was also to prove a point that I can do good without much reliance on them both for guidance, not that they supply enough anyway. The exercises and projects themselves are indeed interesting and definitely a challenge to get by, all the while staying true to their progressively more challenging nature.

Observation

As I dive myself deeper into understanding what Typography is and exploring different ways it can be interpreted, I'm astounded by the overwhelming amount of nuances that exist throughout historic and modern typography. The amount of consideration and care that are put into the little details are what makes the most of a design and I find myself practising this habit into all my other modules. But above all, the one thing that this module has successfully given me enough emotional trauma to fully instil in all my design is an idea. The single most important thing that brings a composition together and making it relevant is the idea that the designer has to successfully communicate through visual stimulant is perhaps the one thing I've missed out most throughout my time designing various works prior to entering this university, and I am glad to have learned it now.

Findings

I find that at the end of the semester, although I disagree with the lecturer's academic practise, I have made a significant advancement in my designs. I don't know if I should take all that credit for myself after weeks and weeks of researching different techniques, concepts and topics; bombarding my friends' and family's inbox for continuous opinions on my work, and most importantly developing a habit of being critical with my designs. Or if I should give that credit to the two lecturers who have given me enough distaste to excel. Nevertheless, these 14 weeks have been proved fruitful and I sincerely hope actions will be taken to this module so future designers from this university would be decent in both practise and in ethics.
