FINAL REFLECTION

Experience

At the end of the semester, oddly enough, I could say that Advanced Typography isn't the hardest module to finish. I know, even I'm questioning myself as I'm typing this. Personally, I did enjoy the first few weeks of classes when peer reviews were introduced to encourage student participation in the classroom. I was even excited to attend the classes and hear my classmates' thoughts on my work. In the breakout rooms that I was put into, I could see progressive confidence in my peers when reviewing each other's work and it was great to see that this new system wasn't putting as much strain on the lecturers as the previous student-lecturer feedback session in the Typography class I had in Semester One. Although, this system was abruptly removed after the first quarter of the semester, putting a massive disturbance on my pacing. Thus, greatly reducing my motivation to pour in as much effort and consideration into my designs, specifically affecting the outcome of my Task Three. Furthermore, there are still huge logic holes that exist in the management of this module, the biggest being: Why Facebook? Of all the platforms that are made available and have been constantly improved over time to accommodate for online learning such as Google Classroom, using Facebook for class updates, additional notes, and work submissions feels like an odd choice. The recorded lectures themselves were interesting enough to listen through and although it surprised me, I appreciate that my lecturers contacted me when I've been skipping classes out of mental fatigue.

Observation

This module stuck through its progressively difficult nature as expected at the start of the semester. It was pleasing to find that the concepts taught in the previous semesters paid off when coming up with designs in this module specifically. A surprising thing about this module: unlike before, it tested my technical abilities and application to its limits instead of just focusing on concepts and ideas. Although it was extremely difficult and in no way did I enjoyed that experience, it's very valid.

Findings

This module, paired with Typography, has a lot to offer to its students. It teaches meticulousness, balance, hierarchy of information, confidence, and so much more. But its execution needs more attention and consideration. Having the excuse that harsh critique teaches the students resilience is an outdated and traditional idea to teach the core concept of positive feedback reaction. It drains the students from having any motivation to produce quality work and instead instils the idea that chasing deadlines is the priority. Particularly in this pandemic where everyone is trying their absolute best to get through their day to day routine, this semester just makes me question: Where is the empathy?
