FINAL REFLECTION
Experience
The one phrase that I possibly have said to Ms Maria countless times this
semester is "I'm so sorry for being late!" which sums up about
ninety-per cent of my conversations Ms Maria. It was both really funny and
super terrible that I always end up being late for almost all of the
submissions for Design Principles this semester, and I find it super relieving
that Ms Maria never excessively scolded me for my lack of punctuality. I think
that's a good introduction to how Ms Maria has treated me throughout the
entire semester: Kind and Understanding. Although I always dread her classes
because I barely have any progress to show her and always have to improvise
something hours prior to my consultation sessions, the effort that Ms Maria
showed to make sure that her students do their job and guide the students as
best as she could was truly something to be appreciated. I always awe at the
fact that Ms Maria would go until way past the class period has ended to make
time for her students' consultation session. The honesty that she has in class
is also one more thing that I really appreciate. She makes sure to point out
any concerns she has with any of my designs and all of her comments are always
backed up by valid points that tie back to the nature of this module.
Observation
This module ironically helped me develop my artistic sense a lot.
Although some people have said to me that art and design are not to be
confused together, I never really felt that I strayed too far off the
objectives of the exercises and projects when I ask Ms Maria for feedback. One
of the things that the lecturer has done really well was to ensure that I have
a rationale for each and every one of my designs, making me become critical of
what design principles I should include to reflect certain ideas. She's also
quick to note when any of my designs are too weak and useless before the
submission deadlines so I have some time to start over with another design
(although I think that's one of the reasons why I'm always late for
submissions).
Findings
These 14 weeks in Design Principles were challenging to say the least. This
module holds so many exercises and projects that I had a hard time trying to
catch up with my classmates. However, the attitude that both my classmates and
my lecturer have shown in class motivated me to push harder and practice my
artistic skills so I can become better at both traditional and digital design.
At the end of the semester, I don't think I've felt like my choice of design
style was personally rejected by the lecturer, that alone has truly made me
feel more confident with my own individuality. Much like the key takeaway from
Digital Photography and Imaging, this module helped me detach myself from the
style that the rest of the class seem to follow and develop my own distinct
taste. It has made me realise the social pressure that we designers have to
create something familiar is destructive to both the designer and
society because it robs them of their own creativity and their uniqueness. It
is said that design and art are two different things, however, both cannot
exist without the other. When there is no design, art loses that sense of
simplicity and structure that allows it to make sense. Without art, design
loses creative freedom and expression which shortens the boundaries of what
design is. I truly appreciate the patience Ms Maria has when dealing with me
and I wish her all the best for the future.
