Week 1 | Introduction To The Negotiated Specialism Project

The Self-Negotiated Project or the Negotiated Specialism Project is a semester long assignment that is aimed towards improving our technical and conceptual abilities to enhance our creative presence in the industry. As an animation and game art student, I'm required to create an idea for a project that relates to my course, whether it be a short animated movie, a character and environment design, or a 3D project.

SELF-NEGOTIATED PROJECT

The self-negotiated project was exciting news for me because the way it's constructed meant I'm able to create a piece of work that is specifically made to showcase my abilities as a designer and animator. While other modules are meant for us to learn new techniques and discover new things about the animation industry, this project felt focused on our current abilities that we want others to see. It was also refreshing to attend classes alongside other students in the arts and design faculty, seeing the ideas and creative palette the design, illustration, and fashion students had was definitely very much needed.

In the lectures, Mark had explained that the self-negotiated project should be something that is worthwhile and personal for us– a project that potentially could be the cover face of our portfolios. Oddly enough, having the infinite option to choose our own project was counter intuitive for me. For a very long time throughout the semester I mulled over different ideas that would be suitable for both the time and the current workload between the other modules. Unfortunately, in the middle of the semester a complication with my housing situation affected my mental health and hindered me from being able to put in my best effort for the project. However, I tried my best to create something simple in the time I had after receiving my Extenuating Circumstance.

    Idea Exploration

After getting off a call with Mark during the final weeks of the project, he explained that it is important that I find something that I'm passionate about and create a work that I'll be proud of. I was sort of lost with that thought considering the overwhelming thought of deadlines creeping up. But when asked about what I'm passionate about, Mark agrees that I can do a music video for the submission, granted that it'll be different from my AND224 submission.

From that point I tried looking for different short-format motion graphic music videos and picked the following three videos as my main inspiration for the project. Triangle Motion by レオル, Circle Motion by レオル, and Motion Graphics with only Shapes by kleshaproductions

    Moodboard

Short on time, I threw together some illustrations that has an interesting narrative as inspiration for my short animated video.

    Animating

Watching the new song from Yorushika titled 'Left Right Confusion', I felt it there was some charm from using a still image (or rather a still shot of an animated environment) for an entire music video. It also meant I get to save time for the submission. I created a mix of what I managed to put together in my moodboard and made a slow-reveal of the final image for my final submission.
