LECTURES
Introduction
Project 1: Project Proposal is the first section of the three-part project that extends throughout the Intercultural Design Module this semester. My groupmates and I are placed as GROUP TWO where Emma Hardy is the group leader and my other group mates are Ariessa Jasmine, Hui Woan, Tresha Teo, and Seerat.
Week 1 | Project Briefing
The main goal of the project is to provide students with the opportunity to understand the role of design and the designer in a wider cultural, political, and social context. It aims to introduce students to local and/or global design and design issues through engagement with outside agencies, groups, or cultures; which may present opportunities for collaboration. Students are to study a specific subculture that exists in the world over a period of seven weeks.
The expected outcome of this project is a visual design that depicts the groups' interpretation of their chosen subculture. The general theme of their research is "Framing" and they are to choose one subtheme from the list of five: Preservation, Revival, Sustenance, Assimilation, and Trends.

PROJECT 1 | PROPOSAL
Throughout the three weeks, we've spent our time studying a subculture in Japan named Yami Kawaii. This subculture intrigued us with their unorthodox way of battling against Japan's treatment of mental health and we believe they have the potential to spread awareness on mental health to the general public. We came up with research questions, objectives, some in-depth research of the subculture, preliminary sketches for the final design, and coming up with different research methods to be carried out in the project.

FEEDBACK
The main takeaway from the feedback session was the lecturers' concern with using Tarot Cards as the final design. Their argument was that Tarot Cards in today's day and age are more often associated with fortune-telling. With Yami Kawaii being such a dark topic, there could be some cause of concern from the public's reaction to such imagery being shown in the Tarot Cards format. They advised that we shift into a different direction for our final design.

REFLECTION
Although the project is only a starting point, it was already intriguing to conduct research on the different cultures in the world. Choosing one took the group a bit of time but when Yami Kawaii was brought to the table, it was plain and obvious what culture we were going for. Collectively as a group we find that studying Yami Kawaii's approach to spreading awareness on mental health was both important and interesting. Diving deeper into the topic, we slowly begin to question more about the implications and the future of Yami Kawaii. We found that their way of setting a bold statement on mental health could be exemplary to the rest of the world on how important this topic is. Thus we slowly gravitated on setting our main sub-theme of the project as sustenance of Yami Kawaii.
