LECTURES

    Lecture 3 | Introduction to Project 1

After exploring the different methods of conveying information to an audience, we were tasked to develop an infographic that presents a series of different processes as visuals rather than text. During the briefing session, Ms Anis was eager to show us this youtube channel named Pasta Grannies. Pasta Grannies have been running on YouTube for years and they have been providing viewers with the most wholesome YouTube cooking tutorials ever seen on the planet. Ms Anis was particularly fond of the contents of that show, so she tasked us to create an infographic poster.

PROJECT 1 | INSTRUCTABLE POSTER

Of the myriad of recipes on the channel, I chose a simple but comforting Margherita recipe personalised by Giocanda & Bartolo. The lovely old couple currently resides on the island of Ischia, where they collect bountiful harvests from their garden overlooking the sea to make warm homemade dishes.

IDEA EXPLORATION

The main idea for my final design is to use the motif of layers. Pizza is a dish that puts an emphasis on layers of flavour; you have the dough, sauce, protein, vegetables, and so much more. Thus I only thought it would be fitting to accentuate this layering motif to enhance the effectiveness of my infographic.

Besides that, I foresaw that this project needed a lot of references for it to successfully blend into one final design. So I did a lot of research on how these ingredients looked like and translated them into assets to be used in the project.

SKETCHES

As instructed by Ms Anis, I began the project by creating a mindmap of the information I'm going to include in my final design from the YouTube video. I used the Who, What, Where, and How method of organising information to get a rounded knowledge of the video and began sketching my ideas for my final design.

DEVELOPMENT

The development of the infographic poster took me the longest time out of any other projects given this semester. This was mainly because I felt like the layout was not satisfactory. Throughout most of the project, I worked purely in values because my mind couldn't come up with a proper colour scheme for the project. Although, once I finished designing all the assets, I reworked the layout and started experimenting ever so slowly with colours. I decided that the newer layout could fit more information for a proper infographic and I tried to use complementary colours to make the poster interesting.

FEEDBACK

Week 4

Ms Anis liked the amount of information I managed to get out of the YouTube video and approved of my concept of having a design centred around layers. Although, she advised that I add more colours to my mindmap to make my design more engaging.

Week 5

Ms Anis looked through my initial layout sketch and approved it without much comment. Although, with the monotone technique I used, she's concerned about the colouring of the poster, saying that isometric designs relies heavily on colours to portray form.

Week 6

Showing Ms Anis my new layout, she approved of the layout and complimented on my progress.

REFLECTIONS

Experience

This project was extremely hard to execute to say the least. The amount of frustration I went through figuring out the colour scheme, the illustration style, and the layout was immense. How can one pizza recipe poster make me go through so much struggle? It was hilarious, really. But once I start laying down the little details in the ingredients, experiment with colours, and changing the layout, there was much smoother flow in my work and I even managed to have some fun while adding the final touches.

Observation

My greatest concern when doing this project was how much am I doing that can be considered as plagiarism? I pondered on that question a lot more while designing the poster than I've had ever in my life before, which baffled me. It was hard to get over that thought because I've always imagined myself to be an ethical designer. It was at one point while redesigning the poster layout that I realise something from my Illustration & Visual Narrative module last semester, which said that referencing from other artists is something normal. That reminded me of the talks and articles I've read of artists who claims that drawing or designing without reference restricts an artist to a narrow point of view. This helped me gain more confidence to use more reference to make my designs more interesting.

Findings

I find that I work the best when I have a clear goal in mind. Doubting this goal would only slow my process and restrict myself from elevating my designs into new heights. My choice of using more references than what I usually do was definitely a good decision to be made. I also tried to be riskier in the design by adding as much information as I can in the infographic, to adhere to Ms Anis' feedbacks towards my exercises. This project was overall difficult but worthwhile.
